Train your people well

This is pretty simple and probably something you've heard before, so I'll keep it short.
What are your expectations?
Have you communicated those expectations to your staff and volunteers?
Are you continually communicating your expectations?
Do you regularly follow up to see if your expectations are met?
There is almost nothing more frustrating (from the staff/volunteer perspective) than getting reprimanded for something you didn't know how, what or why to do it.
There are many great books out there about training your team, however, there is a chapter in the book The Ultimate Sales Machine that is outstanding on training people in your organization.
